Getting the GLAS message across.

You may have noticed a slightly different GLAS logo in use recently on our newspaper advertising and website. This has prompted some members to suggest it may be time to look again at our approach to how we get our message across to our members, the public and gallery visitors.

So, between now and the end of August, I’d ask you to give some thought to the following things:

  1. How can we improve the way we get our message across to our members, the public and gallery visitors?
  2. What do you think a more relevant logo, one that instantly tells the viewer what we are and where we are, should look like?
  3. What background colours, font styles and colours should always be used in our advertising and correspondence so that our presentation is consistent?

If you’d like to have your say, send me a your thoughts on the above and a sketch of a new logo. It doesn’t have to be finished artwork, just so long as it reflects your idea.

What happens next?

As I receive submissions, I’ll ask you to tell the next General meeting why you believe your ideas can help us improve the way we get our message across.
During September, I’ll chair a small committee comprising a graphic design lecturer from TAFE, a representative from a local newspaper advertising department and a web designer to evaluate all submissions. That committee will then put forward their considered opinion as to the best way we should move forward. Then all members will be given the reasons for the proposed changes before we formally adopt the new ‘style’.

ps. What we will finish up with is a very simple ‘style guide’ that everyone who helps to get our message across can follow. And if you always wanted to know what a style guide contains, read on

What is a Style Guide and Why Would GLAS Need One?

A style guide is a means of documenting our approach to certain elements of writing and graphic style that needs to be consistent.
Style guides are generally associated with journalism and web copywriting.
In each of these cases, there is a need to ensure that the writing style is consistent and so guidelines are usually published to allow more than one author to contribute while ensuring that the finished piece does not necessarily carry the personal style of the writer but that of the organisation or website associated with the writing.

Style can encompass many different aspects like:
